Oakland Postcard Series

In 2013, Paintbox Productions moved to the 23rd floor of a building on the shore of Oakland’s Lake Merritt. From there we had a spectacular view of the lake, which is actually a tidal lagoon located in the center of the city. Surrounded by parkland and neighborhoods, the lake features grassy banks and several islands reserved for birds only. It was the nation's first official wildlife refuge when it was established in 1870. The Boating Center provides classes and sailboat, canoe and rowboat rentals. The Lake Merritt Rowing Club welcomes competitors to annual regattas, while the authentic Venetian Gondola Service offers romantic rides at sunset. Children’s Fairlyland, Oakland’s storybook themed amusement park, has delighted visitors since 1950.

The exquisite light that falls on Lake Merritt creates an ever-changing display that prompts me to take photographs nearly everyday. Reactions to the images are very positive, but the comment I hear most often is, "I had no idea Oakland was so beautiful." I've been a designer and photographer for my most of my life, so it seemed natural to capture these little pieces of Oakland for people to take home. These postcards spread the word that Oakland, and especially Lake Merritt, are truly beautiful places.
